Radio host, writer, and storyteller their for his work on A Prairie Home Companion. His popular radio variety show, broadcast live from Saint Paul, Minnesota and various touring locations, featured a humorous "News from Lake Wobegon" segment, as well as numerous musical performances.
In 1966, he received an English degree from the University of Minnesota.
He began his radio career with Minnesota Educational Radio in 1969.
He married Mary Guntzel in 1965, Ulla Skaerved in 1985, and Jenny Lind Nilsson in 1995.
He penned the screenplay for the 2006 film version of A Prairie Home Companion, which was directed by Robert Altman.
