She funded her education at the University of Dayton by writing humor pieces for a local department store's newsletter.
A compilation of her humor columns, At Wit's End, was published in 1967.
She married Bill Bombeck in 1949. The couple adopted a daughter in 1953 and had a biological son in 1955.
She and Gloria Steinem were both Ohio-born journalists.
