Renown physicist who is best known for creating the optical fiber that's used in fiber optics. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1993 for his contributions to engineering.
He used to play with prisms and lenses as a child in Lansing, Michigan.
He was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Lightwave Technology.
He had a father who was a physicist, and he persuaded him to change his major to physics in college.
He was awarded the National Medal of Technology by Bill Clinton in 2000.
