Alto saxophone player known for his 1960s and early 1970s jazz collaborations with renowned double bass player Charles Mingus.
Early in his musical career, he recorded albums entitled Bebop Revisited! and From This Moment On!
He performed with such fellow jazz musicians as pianist Kenny Drew, trumpeter Art Farmer, and double bassist Sam Jones.
He was born in Missouri and raised in Detroit, Michigan.
He recorded jazz saxophone pieces originally played by legendary musician Charlie Parker for the soundtrack of the 1988 film Bird.
