He studied at the State University of New York before collaborating with Woody Herman.
He has been ranked the number one baritone saxophone player by the Down Beat Readers and Critics polls.
He married Joan Cornachio, a pianist and conductor.
Smulyan and Jim McNeely have played with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
