Carl Jacob Lowig
Chemist
German chemist who discovered bromine in 1825 while investigating salty water. Bromine was discovered independently by Antoine Jérôme Balard the following year. The two scientists are both regarded as having discovered the element.
He received his PhD at the University of Heidelberg for his work with Leopold Gmelin.
He was also associated with the University of Zurich.
He worked and lived in Breslau until his death in 1890.
He is one of many German chemists, including August Kekule.
