She received advice from Dizzy Gillespie, who encouraged her to start a musical career after hearing her play at Southern Methodist.
She collaborated with Stevie Wonder on his song "Another Star."
She attended Texas Southern University and Southern Methodist University.
She has collaborated with Duke Ellington in live performances.
