August Macke
Painter
German Expressionist artist known for his colorful landscape paintings; prominent in The Blue Rider group. Some of his works included "View into a Lane," a watercolor from 1914, and "Rokoko," an oil on canvas from 1912.
He worked as a stage and costume designer at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf while taking evening art classes with Fritz Helmut Ehmke and studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
He collaborated with Paul Klee and Robert Delaunay.
He was the only child of building contractor and amateur artist August Friedrich Hermann Macke. He married Elisabeth Gerhardt in 1909.
He was a close friend of German painter an d printmaker Franz Marc.
