Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Painter
Expressionist painter who was inspired by African and Polynesian art. He helped found the artists group Die Brücke or The Bridge that pioneered Expressionism early on.
He studied architecture in Dresden for a brief period, where he learned about freehand drawing, perspective drawing, and art history. He also met and befriended Fritz Bleyl while in his first term.
He illustrated a novel by Adelbert von Chamisso.
He was born to parents of Prussian and Huguenot ancestry. He led a tragic life devoid of lasting relationships; sadly, he committed suicide in 1938.
He and Emil Nolde were both members of Die Brücke.
