American poet, author, and scholar who received the Pushcart Prize and two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. Her poetry collections include Holding Our Own, Climbing Up to Light, and The White Bird.

Before Fame

She earned degrees in journalism, English, and American literature from Stanford University (BA-1938) and from the University of California-Los Angeles (MA- 1958, MA- 1961, PhD- 1962).

She was particularly active on the literary scene during the 1960s and 1970s. Her poetic works from this period include The Weathercock, The Descent, and In Mediterranean Air.

Family Life

She married architect Roland Arthur White in 1942; they subsequently raised four children.
