Allan McCollum

Conceptual artist whose best-known works included "Perfect Vehicles" and the "Surrogate Paintings" series, which shot him to fame in the 1970s.
He moved to England as a young man to pursue a career as a theater actor. However, he quickly returned to California, where he worked various odd jobs before devoting himself to his art.
His work was prominently featured in the Whitney Biennial in 1975.
He was raised in the Los Angeles area as the son of an actor father and a musician mother.
He and fellow artist Ronald Davis both grew up in California.
