He battled a life-threatening blood disease early in his career, but it barely slowed him down.
After retiring from swimming in 2004, he began an acting career, debuting in 2010 in BBC's "The Cut."
His sister, Beverley Turner, became a successful TV presenter.
His brother-in-law, James Cracknell, is a fellow Olympian, having competed in rowing.
