Ukrainian swimmer and four-time Olympic gold medalist who won the 200 and 400 meter individual medley races in 2000 and 2004.
She won her first international competition medal at the 1998 World Championships, taking silver in the 400 m medley.
She won two golds at the 2000 Olympics and two more at the 2004 games.
Her parents were both track and field athletes but neither pursued it as a career.
She won two golds at the 2004 Olympics where fellow swimmer Michael Phelps won six gold medals.
