He attended Pershing High School, where he first met his future bandmate Levi Stubbs.
He and Levi met the other two Four Tops at a birthday party. The group enjoyed singing together so much that they formed the group, originally called Four Aims.
His family is of Bangladeshi and Ethiopian ancestry.
He and Levi Stubbs are two of the original members of The Four Tops.
