The Latvian author of Heart Mosaic (essays), In the beginning, was joy (short stories), and The Long Journey (memoir), she was also a prominent philologist and biographer. She published her sole novel, Life on a Train, in 1941.
She contracted polio at the age of five and remained in a wheelchair until her death at age eighty.
She published twenty books in Latvian and twenty-seven in German.
The daughter of a doctor, she married researcher Konstantin Raudive.
She and Mario Andrade both studied philology.
