Chinese-French conceptual artist known for his controversial work. He often used images of nature such as snakes, insects and turtles to comment on human behavior.
He studied oil painting at the Zhejiang Academy in Hangzhou. He started making traditional work in the 1970s.
After the Tiananmen Square massacre occurred while he was in Paris in 1989, he decided not to return to China.
His wife was named Shen Yuan. His daughter was named Huang Yan.
His early artistic inspiration came from John Cage, Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Beuys.
