A Syrian-born American chess player who won the US Championship in 1981, 1986, 1989, and 2000.
He burst onto the scene when he won the World Junior Chess Championship in 1979.
He was the chief editor of the Inside Chess magazine for twelve years.
His family moved from Syria to England and then to the United States when he was a child.
He was a World Junior Chess Champion in 1979, 24 years after Boris Spassky took home the title in 1955.
