Popular concert singer and actor who performed in the 1952 European tour of the opera Porgy and Bess.
His public singing debut at New York's Town Hall led to a thirty-five concert contract with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
He appeared in the 1951 MGM film version of Show Boat.
He was married to opera star Leontyne Price, but the two divorced in 1972.
He sang in the premiere performances of many of Aaron Copland's musical compositions.
