Award-winning Italian opera singer who sang classics by composers like Giuseppe Verdi and Mozart as a soprano and starred in the 1975 film Madame Butterfly.
She started singing at a young age when she entered a radio competition at ten years old and took a break from performing after that until she was seventeen.
She received the Cavaliere di Gran Croce and the French Légion d'Honneur Award in March 1993.
She married Bulgarian bass Nicolai Ghiaurov.
Her mother and Luciano Pavarotti's mother had worked together in the past.
