He was part of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity while studying law at University of Colorado Law School in Boulder.
He was one of the first justices to believe the Fourteenth Amendment meant that the protection of the Bill of Rights was also state law and not just federal law.
He was married to Annabel Person, with whom he fathered three children: Mary Lou, Jean Ann, and Neal.
He was nominated to the Supreme Court by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
