Wendell Meredith Stanley
Biologist
An American biochemist best known for his work with enzymes and virus proteins who won the Nobel pPize in Chemistry in 1946. His book Chemistry: A Beautiful Thing was awarded a Pulitzer Prize nomination.
He obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1929 from the University of Illinois, where he also received his MS two years before.
He was a Professor of Biochemistry at University of California, Berkeley.
He had four children with his wife Marian Staples after they were married in 1905.
Like Irving Langmuir, he was among the first Americans to win a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
