In 1979, he graduated from University College of London, where he obtained his degree in Geography.
He was the recipient of the Streetstyle Designer of the Year Award from the British Fashion Council on three consecutive occasions: 1996, 1997, and 1998.
He was brought up in Morecambe, England.
He once said that his earliest memories of his mother and grandmother included them dressing him up like Elvis Presley.
