He studied music theory at Northwestern University in Illinois.
His first Grammy Award came for Eric Clapton's "Change the World," which was also nominated for the Record of the Year and Song of the Year awards.
He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio.
He started out as a session musician for singers like Michael Jackson and his sister Janet, along with Babyface and Cher.
