Painter and poet known for "Moonlit Landscape" from 1809 and other works. He pioneered the American Romantic landscape-painting movement.
He studied at Harvard before attending London's Royal Academy.
He lived in the Boston, Massachusetts area for nearly three decades; the city's Allston neighborhood was named after him.
He was married to Ann Channing from 1809 until her death in 1815.
He painted an 1814 portrait of his friend, the renowned author Samuel Taylor Coleridge .
