Italian composer known for his experimental work, such as "Sinfonia" from 1968. He was a pioneer in electronic music.
He injured his hand after failing to operate a gun correctly, thus ending his ambitions to be a professional piano player. He focused on composition from thereon out.
He taught Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead at Julliard.
He was taught the piano by his father and grandfather who were both organists. He married musicologist Talia Peckar in 1977.
He was a contemporary of fellow avant-garde composer John Cage.
