Warren Hastings
Politician
English-born politician who served as Governor-General of Bengal (India) during the 1770s and early 1780s.
At the age of seventeen, he secured work as a clerk with the British East India Company.
He faced charges of governmental corruption and was impeached in 1787 by the British House of Commons. A decade later, he was acquitted of all charges.
He grew up in Churchill, Oxfordshire, England. His mother died soon after his birth, and he and his father lived in poverty for much of his childhood.
He attended London's Westminster School, where he studied alongside English poet William Cowper.
