Republican politician who was the US Senator from Michigan from 1871 to 1883. He was the President pro temp ore of the Senate on two separate occasions.
He first became a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1850.
He was the first person from Michigan to serve in both houses of the Michigan State Legislature and in both houses of the United States Congress.
His parents ran the Mission House on Mackinac Island.
Like him, Senator Debbie Stabenow served in both houses of the Michigan State Legislature and in both houses of the United States Congress.
