Painter
Still-life, landscape, and portrait artist who painted thousands of portraits of his family members. He was dubbed the American Renoir.
He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover and went on to attend Harvard, where he played on the football team.
He painted two murals for the United States Post Office in Troy, New York, in 1938.
He was born into a family of wealthy lumber barons. He had five children and was married four times.
He was a close friend of Ernest Hemingway, and his portrait of the author appeared on a 1937 Time magazine cover.
