About

Novelist who primarily wrote about folklore, especially surrounding the Ozarks region. He co-founded the Ozark Folklore Society, and saw his 1976 book Pissing in the Snow and Other Ozark Folktales become a bestseller in the US.

Before Fame

He graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1914. He subsequently gained his master's from Clark University.

Trivia

Some of his most popular works included Ozark Superstitions (1947), Down in the Holler: A Gallery of Ozark Folk Speech (1953), and Ozark Folklore: An Annotated Bibliography (1987). He was named a Fellow at the American Folklore Society in 1978.
