Three-time All-Star outfielder who won back-to-back National League batting titles in 1962 and 1963.
He played basketball at Boys High School in Brooklyn alongside NBA Hall of Fame guard Lenny Wilkens.
He almost signed with the New York Yankees, but instead signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers after talking to Hall of Fame infielder Jackie Robinson.
He had three daughters and a son from his first marriage, and later married his second wife Carol, with whom he had one daughter.
He helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series in 1963, along with Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax.
