He spent two years traveling through Asia after graduating from high school.
He also earned an Academy Award nomination for the documentary Restrepo, which he co-directed.
He was in a relationship with Idil Ibrahim at the time of his death.
He was posthumously given a flag by Senator John McCain at his memorial service.
