Professional photographer who is known as a fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers. He is best known as a contributing photographer for National Geographic Magazine.
Starting his career as a marine biologist specializing in human-wildlife conflict, he retired from fieldwork in 2004. Instead of pursuing science, he became a wildlife photojournalist after realizing that he could have a greater conservation impact through photographs than statistics. His work focuses on several of the most critical marine conservation issues.
He has written, photographed, and published several books of his work. He is also the winner of multiple BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards.
He was born and raised in Germany.
In 2015, he gave a TED talk titled Dive into an Ocean Photographer's World while aboard Mission Blue II. The event was hosted by TED Talk Prize winner Sylvia Earle.
