Known for his editorial and publishing work with Sports Illustrated and GOLF Magazine, this prominent journalist also served as editor-in-chief of both Esquire and Men's Journal and as managing editor of Rolling Stone and Newsweek. He also founded several magazines, including Outside, Smart, and Rocky Mountain.
After graduating from the University of California, Irvine in the late 1960s, he worked as both a screenwriter and a novelist. In 1980, he published a novel titled California Bloodstock; around this time, he also penned episodes of China Beach and Miami Vice.
He wrote content for a video game called Night Trap.
A native of Norfolk, Virginia, he later settled in New York City with his second wife. His first marriage, to Joan Raffeld, resulted in an actor son named Thomas and a novelist son named Nick.
He and fellow journalist Clay Felker both worked for Sports Illustrated.
