Journalist and editor who established the influential New York Magazine and left an indelible mark on American journalism. Over the course of his career, he worked for The New York Herald Tribune and edited The Village Voice.
After graduating from Duke University, where he studied journalism, he worked for Sports Illustrated, Esquire, and Life Magazine.
He worked to create the article that formed the basis of The Feminine Mystique book.
He was once married to screen actress Pamela Tiffin. His other marriages were to Leslie Blatt and journalist Gail Sheehy.
He was a longtime friend of fellow journalist Tom Wolfe.
