Susan L. Taylor
Journalist
American journalist who became Editor-in-Chief of the African-American women's magazine Essence in 1981.
She began working for Essence in the magazine's first year of publication. While ascending to the rank of Editor-in-Chief, she managed to earn her bachelor's degree from Fordham University.
She was the 1998 recipient of The Magazine Publishers of America's Henry Johnson Fisher Award and was the first African-American woman to receive the honor.
She was born in Harlem, New York City to parents who had immigrated to America from Trinidad and St. Kitts.
She and Condoleezza Rice were both recipients of the prestigious NAACP President's Award during the first decade of the 21st Century.
