A Canadian American molecular biologist who shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas R. Cech for their work on the catalytic properties of RNA.
He was a member of the school's ice hockey team while studying physics at MIT.
He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988.
He has two children with his wife Ann Korner, who he married in 1972.
