He was studying to enter medical school when his brother invited him to partner with him in writing jokes for Bob Hope's radio show.
He joined the writing staff of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet after World War II and became a head writer on The Red Skelton Show, sharing an Emmy for the latter in 1961.
His nephew Douglas Schwartz was the longtime writer for the television series Baywatch, and his brother Al co-wrote with Sherwood several episodes of Gilligan's Island in the 1960s.
His Gilligan's Island, starring Bob Denver, weathered early poor reviews to become one of the most enduring shows on television.
