Samuel Freeman Miller

Served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1862 to 1890.
He graduated from Transylvania University in 1838.
He was part of the electoral commission that was created to resolve the disputed 1876 presidential election between candidates Rutherford Hayes and Samuel Tilden.
His parents were yeoman farmers.
He was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Abraham Lincoln.
