Sam Rivers
Saxophonist
Pioneering jazz saxophonist who helped define the avant-garde "loft" scene in the 1960s and 1970s. He collaborated with many different artists, including many Blue Note artists.
He learned the violin, piano and trombone while growing up.
He made a mark in the jazz world with improvisations grounded in superior technique on multiple instruments and deep knowledge of music.
He had a son and three daughters with wife Bea.
He spent the summer of 1964 touring with the Miles Davis Quintet.
