For her work as a playback singer in Indian films, she was awarded a 2002 National Film Award and numerous Filmfare Awards South, Maharashtra State Film Awards and Zee Gaurav Puraskar Awards.
Early in her career, she provided the singing voice for actress Padmini Kolhapure in the 1982 feature Vidhaata.
Her cinematic playback credits include close to 10,000 Hindi tunes, almost 2,000 Tamil songs, and close to 3,000 Bengali tracks. She is well known for her frequent collaborations with Oscar-winning film composer A.R. Rahman.
Born to singer and music instructor Neela Ghanekar, she grew up in Dabhol, Maharashtra, India.
She and Kavita Krishnamurthy became two of Indian cinema's most acclaimed playback singers.
