Acclaimed playback singer best known for her vocal contributions to films like 2002's Devdas and Khamoshi: The Musical. She is a recipient of the Padma Shri award, one of the most prestigious civilian honors awarded by the Indian government.
She won her first music competition at age eight and moved to Bombay at fourteen to pursue a career in playback singing.
She won three consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer from 1994 to 1996.
She married violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam in 1999.
She was worked with some of the most respected composers in the Indian film industry, such as A.R. Rahman.
