Both a second baseman and shortstop, Goins was drafted and brought up through the Toronto Blue Jays system, helping them reach the NLCS in 2015 before falling short to the New York Mets.
He played college baseball for the Dallas Baptist Patriots from 2007 to 2009, setting a school record for home runs in a single season in 2009 with 22. He made his major league debut with the Blue Jays in August of 2013.
He tied a Blue Jays franchise record when he recorded a hit in his 8th consecutive game to start off his major league career.
He was born in Round Rock, Texas.
He became the starting shortstop for the Blue Jays in the 2015 season after Jose Reyes was placed on the disabled list.
