MLB catcher who spent his entire 19-year career with the New York Yankees and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954.
He played pitcher and second base in high school before being converted to a catcher in semi-pro ball.
He became manager of the New York Yankees in 1946.
He had one daughter, Lorraine, with his wife Violet in 1932.
He had his number 8 jersey retired by the New York Yankees in 1972. 8 was also the number worn by Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra.
