About

Author and activist who broke through with her 2014 essay collection Bad Feminist, for which she received wide acclaim. She later won the 2018 Eisner Award for best limited series for her work on Marvel's World of Wakanda as the comic giant's first black woman author. 

Before Fame

She began her collegiate studies at Yale University before dropping out during her junior career to pursue a relationship. She later earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and was hired at Eastern Illinois University as an associate English professor in 2010. 

Trivia

She was profiled in the 2016 book n the Company of Women: Inspiration and Advice from over 100 Makers, Artists, and Entrepreneurs. She was later honored with the 2018 Lambda Literary Awards trustee award and bisexual nonfiction for her 2018 work Hunger. 

Family Life

She has identified as openly bisexual. Her family is of Haitian descent.
