British entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded the Morpeth, Abbeyfield, and Carr-Gomm charities to provide housing and medical resources for people in need.
He received the prestigious Croix de guerre for his World War II service in the British military. He was one of the soldiers who liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945.
In 1985, he received the honorary title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
He detailed his extraordinary life in a 1979 autobiography entitled Push on the Door.
A London sermon by American preacher Billy Graham inspired Carr-Gomm to abandon his military career in favor of charity work.
