Canadian politician who attempted to negotiate the independence of Quebec. He served as the 23rd Premier of Quebec and founded the Parti Québécois.
He served as a war correspondent for the United States Army in Europe during World War II and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Company after the war.
One of the major bills he passed during his time as Premier was the Quebec Charter of the French Language, which made French the official language of Quebec.
He was married to Louise L'Heureux from 1947 to 1977 and Corinne Côté from 1979 until his death.
He served as Premier of Quebec during the tenure of Pierre Trudeau as the Prime Minister of Canada.
