Composer and pianist of jazz music, more specifically early African American classical music. He is best known for releases like Man Out of Time and Euphonic Sounds.
He fell in love with ragtime as a seventh-grader.
He received the their MacArthur Genius Award in 2004 for being the singular musician devoted to preserving the traditions of classical ragtime while taking the vintage music into contemporary directions.
He learned piano after his mother bought a used one in 1987.
He worked under the tutelage of fellow famed pianist Jon Weber.
