She began swimming on a family vacation to Spain at age three.
She set a world record in the 4×100 freestyle event at the 2009 World LC Championships, finishing in 3:31.72.
She has dated former professional swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband.
She and fellow Danish swimmer Inge de Brujin have both won Olympic gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle events in the same year.
