Rachel Whiteread
Sculptor
Sculptor and installation artist whose best-known works included casts. Known for "House," a concrete cast of the interior of a Victorian house, as well as the resin sculpture of the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square in London and the holocaust memorial sculpture in Judenplatz Vienna.
Her artist mother encouraged her to study both sculpture and painting.
She was awarded the Turner Prize in 1993 and was the first female recipient of this honor.
She and fellow artist Marcus Taylor had two sons.
She and fellow sculptor Tony Cragg were both born in England.
