Irish-born American sculptor of the Beaux-Arts generation who was seen as embodying the ideals of the American Renaissance.
He was apprenticed to a cameo-cutter and took art classes at the Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design.
He referred to his early relief portraits as "medallions" and created a $20 gold coin for the US Mint.
He married Elizabeth Fisher Nichols.
He made a bust of William Tecumseh Sherman.
